Tell us about yourself
My name is Sean Bell, and I have over 15 years of marketing experience working for and consulting with several small service-based businesses and turning them into top performers in their respected markets. I started to understand the entire scope of what it takes to build and grow a thriving business. I was able to take away the pros and cons of each business and the decisions they make.
After some time, I knew that I wanted to take all the knowledge I've learned and build something for myself with my vision. This transition felt natural. And ever since, I've been happier with my life as it has sparked excitement and purpose!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Just getting the vision off the ground and open for business was the biggest accomplishment. It was very challenging in the beginning as there were a lot of moving pieces to get done. With so many moving pieces, you start to become stressed out and impatient with the progress. So much can be out of your control. But once all those pieces come together, it is the most amazing feeling in the world.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Success or failure falls onto you alone. The decisions you make will define your business and the direction it goes. You cannot blame anybody else for your failures. Being a business owner can be very humbling at times. However, it can feel very rewarding when success is achieved!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand Marketing - I cannot tell you how many people I know that attempt to be an entrepreneur without understanding marketing. Marketing does not need to be complicated. It is simply the art & science of communicating value. So the first thing I ask anyone I work with is what value are you offering? What makes your business unique? And can you summarize that message into one line and explain it in under 3 seconds? If so, you need to shout that message from the mountain top. That message needs to be communicated at every opportunity possible.
- Educate yourself daily - As a business owner, you need to know everything about your business and what can improve your business. Time and energy need to be spent on reading business books and blogs, listening to podcasts, visiting conferences, joining a collaborative group like Subkit, employing a coach/consultant, and keeping up and understanding new technology.
- Delegate while still owning the keys to the house - We all are limited to 24 hours in a day, so you will have to delegate out tasks and major areas of your business to grow. But don't delegate out anything that you don't have full ownership of the assets or knowledge of the task. I see this mistake all the time with business owners. Let's take marketing, for example. A business owner knows they need to market their product or service but does not take the time to educate themselves on the topic. So they outsource marketing to an agency that creates all the marketing assets and campaigns (vision, ad copy, videos, login accounts, knowledge of the campaign details). The agency essentially owns the assets. The business owner is now locked into this relationship with no exit strategy. Instead, the business owner needs to take ownership of all the assets and own the keys to the house. If they do that, they can delegate out with confidence and focus on monitoring results. And if the results are not adequate, they can take the keys back and delegate them to another vendor.
