Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angel McNamara, Founder and CEO of Fight Into Fitness, located in Rockville, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a boxing training and fitness gym. Everyone is welcome! We work with youth, anyone looking to compete (all ages), folks who want to de-stress in a safe space, and individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's, to name a few. Every age, size, and experience level has a place at Fight Into Fitness.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been an athlete, and boxing was a sport that intrigued me. I began training when I found a gym willing to accept me as a woman and fell in love! Now, as a former amateur and professional boxer, I found that boxing changed my life in a profound way. I helped my sister lose 40 lbs in 3 months with boxing and realized the other powers of the "sweet science." So naturally, as a caring person, I want to share that same impact with others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating an inclusive atmosphere is a huge point of pride for us. In a traditionally male-dominated space, we are a female-owned gym reinventing what a boxing gym looks like while holding on to the old-school traditional boxing gym feel. Our motto: Boxing. Fitness. Community. Fun.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Paperwork! And reaching everyone because anyone can benefit from our business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Champion something that you love. When running a small business, it's truly a labor of love.
- Invest in your customers. Listen to your staff. Build a community. We prioritize each person and find their strengths. It's not all dollars and cents at the end of the day. Word of mouth is the best form of marketing, so give people something to talk about.
- Ask for help. Budget in for an accountant/bookkeeper, administrator, etc. Do not try to do everything alone. You will burn out, and your mood will follow. Look to resource out things you are not good at, and write out the process so you'll have procedures in place for future employees.
