Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fitness and health but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Hsiung, owner of Fight Fitness, located in Markham, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fight Fitness’ mission is to unleash your inner champion. We work with everyday people to help them become the best versions of themselves. Our services include group fitness kickboxing, boxing, boot camp, 1-on-1 personal training, and online coaching. Unlike traditional fitness models like gyms, personal trainers, and group workouts that are incomplete programs, Fight Fitness is the only one that offers a complete solution with individualized fitness programming, nutritional support, and accountability to ensure long-term results.

Tell us about yourself

I was a former amateur kickboxer, having fought at the Canadian National level, and started Fight Fitness in 2011 to help everyday people utilize kickboxing and martial arts for fitness and health.

I started to business with the goal of just helping people but have since transitioned my role in the company to our Fight Fitness Academy, which was developed to help trainers utilize fitness kickboxing with their clients, thus helping even more people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been growing the business to the point where it grows without me. Having young children myself, my role as a parent is to teach them the skills required for future success in life, and I feel I have done that so far with the business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staffing decisions, in my opinion, are the most challenging thing to deal with. As a service business, my product is my people, and when we have to ensure we always have the best people and this makes for difficult conversations with low performers. This is still something I'm working on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Here's one tip for starting, running, and growing a business. To start a business, just focus on getting ONE customer. When running a business, delegate lower-value tasks so you can replace them with higher-value ones. To grow a business, you need a profitable marketing and acquisition strategy you can turn up or down so that operations can catch up.
