Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Flenje Oaferina, Founder of Fertility Care Works, located in Fremont, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I specialize in working with couples and women struggling to achieve pregnancy to help them successfully conceive naturally, without unwanted side effects or feeling overwhelmed. I have a 12-week-abundant-fertility-project. It's a program that focuses on fueling my client's bodies with delicious, nutrient-dense foods that boost their metabolism and help them one step closer to being in control of their fertility and achieving their goal of getting pregnant. In addition, I teach a fertility awareness-based method to further help achieve their goals by pinpointing the optimal days for conception.

Tell us about yourself

I am married with a pre-teen daughter and have worked as a Home Health Physical Therapist for several years. A turning point for me in wanting to be a fertility coach and NFP teacher was when I experienced several miscarriages because of my inability to carry my pregnancies to term. I underwent dilation and curettage to clean out my uterus after said miscarriages. That's when I sought a health practitioner specializing in Napro technology. She and her Creighton NFP instructor were instrumental in me having a successful full-term pregnancy. During that pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes and, through the guidance of my nutritionist, was able to manage this pregnancy to deliver a happy and healthy child. This journey brought me to the realization of the importance of nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy.

I am passionate about helping other women and their spouses in being able to finally hold that baby in their arms and hold their hands through this journey, letting them know that they are not alone.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment is seeing the joy in my client's faces when they find out that they are pregnant and knowing that I made a difference. My client's success in achieving a healthier lifestyle is my success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is marketing. I have extensive training as a physical therapist and now as a fertility coach. However, I am now discovering the intricacies that go with marketing my business. This is a challenge that I am learning gradually as the CEO of my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Patience, patience, and patience. Seriously, the second one would be consistently showing up for my clients and never giving up on yourself. Because if you do, you will let your clients down, the ones who need your service.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be a lifelong learner. Never stop learning how to improve yourself, whether personally, spiritually, or professionally.
