Early Developmental Support - Feeding Foundations OT
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alessandra McKenna, Founder of Feeding Foundations OT, located in Reading, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide feeding therapy services to infants and young toddlers and run developmental classes.
Tell us about yourself
I started this business after feeling like there was a lack of support and knowledge in early feeding development. I struggled breastfeeding my first daughter and was horrified by the quality of care I received during such a vulnerable and precious time in my life.
I had experience with feeding and decided to expand my knowledge into infant feeding with a specific focus on tethered oral tissues or tongue and lip ties.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been getting started. It was scary and uncertain. There are not a lot of OTs taking this path, so it felt like I had to navigate things without a lot of guidance.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, it is learning how to run a business. I have years of experience as an OT and feel very confident in my clinical skills. I still feel like I am constantly learning in the area of CEO. I have a lot of plans and goals for my company, but I still need to know a lot of the business basics.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start. I think the hardest thing is waiting and waiting until you feel "ready." The best thing you can do is take a chance on yourself.
- Connect with others in your field/area of business. I have made many connections with others running their own business in similar fields. It is helpful to have people bounce ideas off of, collaborate, and ask questions.
- Find your area of passion and stick with it. There are always others you can hire or use to complete areas in your business that you don't love or don't feel you are good at. Once you find the area you strive in, you should stay there and keep working at it.
