Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Hayden-Kent, owner of Feeder Flower Farm, located in Wainfleet, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We grow, and design with our sustainable, specialty cut flowers. We sell flower subscriptions and everyday bouquets retail to customers. Also, We grow wholesale for other local wedding florists in Niagara. We are a "seed to centerpiece" farm that always uses sustainable practices and no floral foam.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had a garden and enjoyed cultivating my own seasonal flowers. We saw a hole in the market that is driven by imports with a lack of quality and riddled with pesticides. We wanted to stand behind our floral designs with the best product, so we have chosen to grow it all ourselves! This promotes local flowers, farming and cuts down the need for importing. I absolutely love the job that I have created for myself and our team - we work very hard and grow the very best!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We continue to grow in size each year and give our team seasonal living wage jobs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping up with all of the back end and emails, phone calls, social media, etc. I want to spend all of my time in the garden and studio, and the business side of things can be a struggle for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Educate yourself and invest in that education (don't expect others to teach you things for free). Plan ahead with your growth and be realistic with your goals. Hire a smart team who is driven and invested in your goals with you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to do what you want with your life! If you have passion behind your project, success will find you!
