Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Knull, founder of Feed Your Genes, located in Nanaimo, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, and my practice, Feed Your Genes, is focused on genetics. My clients have usually tried everything to fix their health issues by the time they find their way to me, or they were one of the lucky ones who heard about using the latest genetic research to achieve optimal health. Feed Your Genes analyzes your genetics to build a highly individualized plan that includes nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle to support your unique health needs.

Tell us about yourself

After losing nearly 100 lbs. in my early 20s, I went on to gain and lose what felt like the same 50 lbs. in the years that followed. I didn’t understand why diets that seemed to work for everyone else didn’t work for me. I was also suffering from PMS and hormonal imbalances and felt really stuck. In addition, for much of my life, my anxiety was overwhelming.

While working in the supplements industry, I was fortunate to learn that my genetics were playing a major part in everything that was going on for me. (Shocker, right?) Throughout my life, certain genes could switch on and off and affect my health in all kinds of ways. Once I discovered how to support the healthy position of my genetics, my main health complaints all but disappeared! It was such an incredible, life-changing experience. I wanted to help other people get the same results. As for daily motivation: reading my clients’ update emails definitely keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It’s hard to pick one, especially considering I faced a huge challenge only three weeks after launching my business. I had to close my doors due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and move my business to an online platform. I’m proud to say that turned into an accomplishment because I discovered that this created space for so many more clients from all over the world to benefit from my services.

But my biggest overall accomplishment is helping families and friends be healthy together. It means a lot when clients share my support with their family and friends, and my business has grown authentically from word-of-mouth.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a new mother challenges me every day. Some days are harder than others to shift into business gear after spending most days with my daughter. That can be hard, along with juggling too many other things at once, like inventory, scheduling, and such. I’ve learned I need to ask for help or hire support when I can so that my time is spent most powerfully, either while being a mom or being present and up-to-date on current research for my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say:

  • Be fully invested in what you’re doing.
  • Have a plan.
  • Don’t get stuck when it looks different.

My business has grown and changed many times since I launched, and how I thought things would look are so different. Becoming a parent has helped me with scheduling work time even when I don’t have client sessions. I use that time to create content, connect with my followers, and review sales and referrals. All of that helps me understand where my business comes from and where to focus on growing.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are called to start a business or make a major career change, I say do it! I was scared and unsure, but I am incredibly happy that I chose this path. Helping and connecting with people and learning each day brings me joy. Speaking of connecting, people can follow me on Instagram @feed.your.genes. Oh, and one more thing: if you haven’t tested your genetics, now is the time!
