The House That Love Built B&B - Fawn Purnell

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in hospitality but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fawn Purnell, Owner of The House That Love Built B&B, located in St-Pierre-Jolys, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The House That Live Built Bed & Breakfast. Guests who are looking for a tourism experience, a cozy inn, a seasonal tentcation, and all-natural bath products.

Tell us about yourself

When I purchased my 108-year-old farmhouse and began renovating it, I knew that I was meant to share it. I have opened and turned it into a small inn for guests and travelers and expanded it to include all-natural bath and body products that celebrate Canadian culture, history, and life. Last summer, I added a gorgeous 19 x 14‘ BoHo-inspired Glamping tent that allows (guests) to experience tenting at its finest complete with all the luxuries! This summer, the B&B garden and tent are available for event bookings such as anniversaries, showers, intimate weddings, corporate events, and parties for groups up to about 25-30. Fresh garden flowers and soap-making experiential packages are also options for guests!

To top it off, guests can add delicious charcuterie boards or homemade pizza to their stays, learn how to make natural soap, have fun with a hosted murder mystery event, and of course, a delicious, chef-quality garden-to-table breakfast is included! I love hosting people and providing them with a unique opportunity to connect with themselves, their loved ones, nature as well as their creative side.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking a neglected and sad historical house and living on it so it became a cozy and welcoming home for friends, family, and guests has been a joy for me! Turning it into a business with which I can share my home and my own talents is joy-giving!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting known. It’s one thing to be able to provide a service and a product, but getting it out and being known so that people can use your services and enjoy your products is the most challenging for me. I have a great thing to offer. I want everyone to know it and experience it for themselves.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Don’t expect one social media to be your sole source of being known and seen. Make sure you have an excellent media team or web designer behind you so that you can concentrate on the things that you do best and hire help for the things that someone else can do as soon as you are able.
