Dream It, Capture It, Share It - Farawayland Studios
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography and videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lucho Berzek, Owner of Farawayland Studios Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a photo + video studio. We serve both the public and businesses, covering commercial and private events. Basically, we photograph mostly any social activities with some product photography here and there.
Tell us about yourself
I moved to a different country with no money, no friends, and no job, and had to figure out what to do to survive; after a few years of odd trying, I think the business found me instead and without thinking too much and with no plans I just went head-on into business and start photographing everything I could. I haven't stopped since then. I feel like I'm still closer to not having a job than to be successful. That keeps me going, and I can't give up anything soon.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In a way, it is seeing other people that have worked with me over the years grow and improve their craft, maybe because I say something that helps them or because I hustle them so much that they have to keep getting better or hear my complaints, haha.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The backend of things, doing the job could be a passion or everyday life for you but dealing with bills, marketing, customer service, budgeting, etc. - all that entitled to run a successful business is really hard as perhaps you don't have an affinity for those things but also as you become a provider more than a creator. I think perspective shifts so many so often that it is exhausting.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I'm a bad example for any business, haha. I didn't have a business plan when I started, no savings, no market research, and no strategy. Nothing, and I feel I stumbled a lot because of that. I think if I could have chosen three things that helped at the beginning, it would have been:
- A trusting mentor.
- An accountant that guides me with a healthy relationship with money.
- Someone to explain the marketing game.
