Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anne Mauney, Owner of fANNEtastic food, located in Alexandria, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a Registered Dietitian and food blogger aiming to show others that eating healthy can actually be delicious, too! I started my blog in 2009 and have been sharing quick and easy meal ideas and simple recipes ever since.
Tell us about yourself
I started my blog as a place to share recipes and use my creativity to help inspire others to lead healthier lives without deprivation or restriction. Hearing I've inspired readers to try new food, incorporate more veggies in their lives, or get more active is what keeps me going. It feels good knowing that my work has a positive impact on others. I talk a lot to my nutrition clients and also my blog readers about focusing on an "add vs. subtract" approach with healthy living - for example, rather than thinking about what to restrict from your diet (which is not realistic long term), what can you add? Maybe more veggies? Or more protein at breakfast? Or more carbs at lunch so you don't crash in the afternoon? I love helping others figure out how to enjoy food and learn to create meals that are both nourishing and satisfying.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I work hard to show others that eating nutritious meals and leading a healthy lifestyle does not have to mean deprivation or counting calories. I promote an intuitive eating approach both on my blog and with my nutrition clients, and hearing I've helped others to develop a more positive relationship with food is really rewarding.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It can be hard to keep up with all the ways the blogging and social media world keeps changing! I've always loved writing, so the blog is my true passion - but with how popular social media is these days, it makes it hard to know where to dedicate my time and efforts. There are only so many hours in the day, right?
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Follow your passion! I've built blogging into my full career, but I've only been able to do that as it's something I truly enjoy.
- Once you are financially able, outsource anything in your business that you don't enjoy and that doesn't have to be you. It's hard to grow and carry out a vision for your business if you are spending too much time on smaller tasks every day.
- Set yourself up with smart processes from the start with things like accounting and paperwork. It's much easier to keep systems going than to course-correct later!
