Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaclyn Brada, Owner of Fairy Slipper Studio, located in Westminster, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an illustrator and painter specializing in pets and wildlife. My customers are people who love animals and who want custom pet portraits.
Tell us about yourself
I've been an artist all my life, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I decided to really dive in and start creating full-time after years of working jobs I hated. Making art is what makes me happy, and life is too short not to do what you love.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting started, haha! It's very easy to talk yourself out of something that seems impossible or scary. But honestly, I've learned that there really are no 'safe' jobs out there. It goes back to doing what you're passionate about instead of trying to make as much money as possible.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, it's comparing myself to others. It's easy to get wrapped up in what other artists are creating (especially with social media) and tell myself that they're better than me. I just take a step back and tell myself everyone is different in their creative process, and my work is just as important as theirs.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be afraid to stand your ground if people tell you it's not a good idea.
- Everyone has their opinions. Don't expect to get rich quickly; in fact, you'll probably spend more in the beginning.
- Look at it as an investment in your business. Lastly, have fun with it! If it's something you love, then it should bring you joy.
