Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in healthcare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Hornsby, Founder of Faceology OMT, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder of Faceology, the world's first fully online myofunctional therapy practice. We treat patients across the United States and around the world with simple exercises that help our patients with snoring, sleep apnea, allergies, jaw pain, TMJ problems, clenching and grinding, and headaches.
Tell us about yourself
I started my own business over 10 years ago because I had the dream of being my own boss and creating my own schedule so that I could travel the world, which is what I did. I love being an entrepreneur, and to me, the challenges that come along with it in the life of an entrepreneur are totally worth it. These days I am much more settled with kids and a family, so my focus is on creating the best work-life balance possible between being a mom and being a business owner.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was being invited to Japan to speak to a group of 250 dentists. They invited me, along with two dentists from Australia, to teach them myofunctional therapy in Japan. It was an incredible experience - we taught in 3 cities and got to see so much of Japan and get to know some amazing people there.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the most difficult parts of being a business owner is taking on the responsibility of having employees who rely on you for income. To me, it's an honor to be able to provide quality jobs and support a team, and I love that my company has grown to the point where I can help others. However, I take that responsibility seriously, which can sometimes feel like a burden. I want my company to continue to do better and better each year so that my team can be paid more, have access to better benefits, and take care of their families.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My three tips would be:
- Know that you are going to have to work hard and work a lot, at least in the beginning. Being a business owner can look easy and glamorous on the outside, but anyone who is doing it at a high level has had to put in the work and time to get there.
- Remember this quote "your network is your net worth." In business, it's all about building and maintaining relationships and who you know. People are important, so treat people well.
- Don't compare yourself to others or your competition. Stay on your own mission and path if that's what you believe in, and don't get caught up or sidetracked by what others are doing.
