Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Sies, Founder of Exponential Functions, LLC, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Exponential Functions exist to help you maximize your life and your career. As a leadership coach, I work with clients to strengthen skills, overcome gaps, and find their pathway to increased impact, influence, balance, and peace of mind.

Tell us about yourself

I have over 30 years of experience as a leader with private, public, and non-profit entities serving as a project manager, event planner, consultant, Vice President, and supervisor. I love getting things done and getting tremendous joy from seeing my clients overcome challenges and increase their life satisfaction and career and financial goals. I had always found myself in leadership positions and thought all was well. In 2003 I was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, which caused me to re-think my approach to life and leadership. The gift of that experience was learning how to seize health and live. My journey led to a career change; instead of working for others, I had the strong urge to forge my own path and become an entrepreneur. Since then, I have started and run my own companies and joined other entrepreneurs in their creation. I went back to school to get an MBA, then Certification as a Life and Leadership Coach. I love learning and always find the next great tool to add to my coaching practice.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Learning to be resilient and know that I’m better with the team around me. Because my husband and I own businesses, we have created a living lifestyle in our various homes throughout the year. Essentially creating a great life by being near family, following the sun, and finding community wherever we live.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to fail forward and not let failure define your value and worth. To pick yourself up, learn the lesson and move forward to success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Decide who you want to serve and how best to meet that need.
  2. Get help with your plans.
  3. Count the cost and Go for it anyway!
