Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ed Evarts, founder and president of Excellius Leadership Development, located in Wakefield, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help successful leaders build their self-awareness so they can self-manage more effectively.
Tell us about yourself
I left my last corporate job in 2008, and I was inspired to feel more accomplished. I loved the work I did, yet I did not feel like I was helping make the world a better place. Today, I can navigate the waters of accomplishment more tangibly and effectively by working with successful leaders. I am inspired to help leaders be more successful in every interaction they have.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting from scratch. I did not intend to leave my prior organization, and once I did leave, I did not want to go back to another corporate role. Hence, I had to identify a career path - leadership coaching - and understand how to be self-employed.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Getting and managing revenue. I believe that revenue is king. Regardless of what you do for a living, you need revenue to keep going. And cash flow is queen. Even if you have revenue, when you collect that revenue impacts your business operations on a daily basis. It is important to manage revenue generation and cash flow effectively.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Always believe there is no reason why you cannot be successful.
- Ensure you have significant other support.
- Ensure that you are focused on revenue generation in the early days. You need to prove to yourself that this business opportunity will work.
