Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Guevara, founder of EvolvewithGuap Inc., located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm like your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman - not necessarily saving your life, but I do want to improve your overall health. Whether you're a parent of 3 kids, a student in University, or a young professional focusing on yourself, I will help you achieve your goals and much more. Did I mention this is all done online without leaving the comfort of your home?
Tell us about yourself
I used to train youth soccer athletes for about four years. During this period, I have sent many across the States for scholarships and some off to Europe to play in the big leagues. After stepping out of the industry for several years, I met Dan Go (my mentor), who provided me a gateway back into the fitness industry via online coaching. Since COVID hit, many people gained weight, and everything moved online; this was an opportunity to take advantage of. In no time, I was getting back into my coaching rhythm, learning from my mentor, and getting re-certified. Since my mentor works with higher achievers and charges a much higher price point, very few of my followers, friends, and family members were able to afford his services - hence me creating my own business, listing my own services, and focusing on working with the "every day" person who is committed to making the change in their life.
I've had a client tell me that they're not as hopeful about getting to the goal weight we initially talked about, but as time went by and the weight continued to drop, the end goal seemed that much closer and more realistic than he ever had thought. My client had more energy playing with his kids, feeling stronger in the gym and lighter on his feet. Its moments like these excite me about what I'm trying to accomplish in life - to be an inspiration, a teacher, and a role model.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Aside from working with some well-known clients in the "Twitter or Social Verse." As simple as this sounds, I would say not quitting, always adapting, and trying to move the needle forward day by day. Sometimes it can be tough as a business owner venturing off on your own, and I have known a few clients who have quit their startups due to little progress made in their first year or so. If you're passionate about what you're pursuing, trust the journey and keep putting in the work. Hard work will pay off.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It would have to be out-sourcing. I've always been the "do it all myself" type of person, but in order to meet deadlines, grow in other areas (social media, marketing, etc.) I'd have to rely on someone experienced to help out who understands my same vision.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Either start a profitable business that is easy to scale or if you're the creative type of person, find something you're passionate about that can help provide solutions to people's problems.
- Purchase the Vivid Vision book and plan out the next three years of your business and every three years moving forward.
- Set quarterly milestones. Assess, break down your numbers, see areas of growth, and set a game plan of next steps to ensure you're hitting next quarter's goals.
