Virtual Presurgical Evaluations - Evolutis Health

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sheel Patel, CEO of Evolutis Health, located in Munster, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Evolutis Health provides psychological evaluation required for a select number of medical treatments and surgical interventions. For example, suppose your doctor recommends you have bariatric surgery. In that case, your health insurance will not approve the procedure without psychological clearance. Psychologists who are comfortable and experienced with these evaluations are few and far between. Obtaining clearance may take months and may not even be possible, depending on where you live. Evolutis uses telemedicine to provide these services to patients who, otherwise, may not have access to them.

Tell us about yourself

I am anesthesia trained interventional pain specialist. Neuromodulation therapy is one of our greatest tools in the fight against chronic pain and the opiate epidemic. This treatment requires psychological evaluation/clearance before insurance approval. I found the biggest barrier to getting my patients the treatment they needed was obtaining psychological clearance. There were limited providers in the area who accepted these referrals. Because of that, it would take months to get the evaluations performed by local psychologists. Oftentimes, patients would decline altogether because of how long the process could take, Evolutis providers focus exclusively on these evaluations, allowing patients to get the care they need when needed. Removing a large barrier to and increasing access to health care for those that need it most is extremely rewarding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Nationwide, the average turnaround time for a presurgical psychological evaluation can be 3-6 months. Evolutis received an urgent referral for a patient suffering from severe chronic pain. The procedure was to be performed as soon as possible to help the patient. Our staff worked with the referring doctor's office to turn the referral around in under 6 hours. The patient was evaluated by the physician around 8 am, had her psychological evaluation around noon, and was in the operating room that evening around 7 pm.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Healthcare policies and regulations are always changing. To make things more complicated, telemedicine is relatively new to providers and insurance companies alike. The ever-changing landscape of a behavioral health telemedicine-based practice presents new challenges each day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your industry inside and out.
  2. Ensure adequate funding prior to starting,
  3. Make legal compliance priority number 1 prior to operating.
