What's your business, and who are your customers?

EvidenceCare is a new type of clinical decision support system (CDSS) with its EHR-integrated and content-agnostic platform that empowers better care decisions by improving clinical workflows. The EvidenceCare platform was built for hospitals and health systems to provide clinicians with evidence-based insights and measurable outcomes at the point of care. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, EvidenceCare is one of the top INC 5000 fastest-growing healthcare tech companies and has won multiple awards for its innovative products and platform.

Tell us about yourself

My mother was a nurse, so I spent a lot of time as a child being around the hospital and clinical settings. I was drawn to the emergency medicine specialty because you get to help people when they have an incredible need in their most vulnerable state. Emergency physicians get the opportunity to be a level presence in a traumatic setting.

The idea of EvidenceCare started one night when I was working in the emergency room, and a young woman presented with extreme shortness of breath and a fast heart rate. It turned out she had a massive blood clot between her heart and her lungs and was also 36 weeks pregnant. I found myself (as a national expert on her condition) struggling to determine the best treatment approach for her with consideration for her unborn child. I did what 86% of physicians do when they have a clinical question – I turned to Google!

The patient and her baby did well, but the case highlighted for me the reality that physicians are making life-changing decisions on a daily basis with a complete vacuum of tools to assist them. We created EvidenceCare with the vision of creating software that empowers physicians to make better care decisions when they need it most - at the point of care.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We were recently listed on the INC 5000 fastest-growing companies list, which is an incredible accomplishment, especially when I think back to those early days of getting EvidenceCare started and wondering if we'd make it through the pandemic. In addition to that award, I'm so proud of the team we've assembled over the last couple of years and am grateful every day to work alongside people who are helping bring this original vision to life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part was raising capital as a startup with a great idea that needed to be built. It takes so much time and works to build a great team and build a great product. As we grew and pivoted during COVID, we had the added challenge of integrating into Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and selling into large health systems that have multiple stakeholders and buyers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Grit. The persistence to wake up every day and continue to push in the face of adversity, success, failures, opportunities, etc. This has become a core value of our company, to be gritty every day!
  2. Passion. You have to love the idea/business and be obsessed with it. There will be days when you will hate it when you question why you did this and whether it would have been better if you never took the risk. You have to see it through using the passion you have for creating change in an industry you care about.
  3. Invest in the product and people.
