Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Gallagher, Founder of Evergreen Script Services, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Evergreen Script Services provides freelance writing, design, and coaching (professional development) to new businesses and those in transition. We focus on small businesses that support the well-being of people in local communities.
Tell us about yourself
I'm an author, and I began freelancing after the publication of my third book. Friends started asking me for guidance on how to share their business stories and the use of social media to connect with their authentic clients and customers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping entrepreneurs understand the value of narrative or professional storytelling. Our stories really create a path toward our ultimate success.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Going it alone! The 'free' in freelancing sometimes feels more like freefalling, especially during challenging times. As someone who supports small businesses exclusively, the COVID lockdown of 2020 was particularly brutal, and I still haven't fully recovered from that shift.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Talk to other entrepreneurs - not just in your own industry. What one person is going through now might resonate later, and you can learn and benefit from their wisdom.
- Focus on one thing that you know that you do exceptionally well, price it appropriately, and market it to everyone you meet.
- For God's sake, write a business plan! It doesn't have to be fancy, but nearly every business owner I've met in the past five years told me they didn't write one because they weren't planning to get a loan. A business plan isn't for your loan officer - it's for YOU. You will actually learn how to be successful in your industry when you write a plan for yourself. If funding becomes necessary, you can always take your informal business plan to a writer/editor to spruce it up for a better financial outcome.
