Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Johnson, Owner of Evergreen Candle Co., located in Woodland, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Evergreen Candle Co. is a home-based, family-owned business. We strive to make the highest quality handmade candles, melts & soaps for those who want cleaner options for their home.
Tell us about yourself
I'm Ashley, owner of Evergreen Candle Co. After years of burning candles and dealing with the migraines that followed. I wanted a better option than what I found on most store shelves. One that would allow me to have candles and avoid migraines. Since 2014 when we first started, my husband and I have spent many hours continuing to search for and source the best supplies we could find.
We have been determined over the years to help others with the same problems I had with traditional products everyone is used to seeing. I always love when a customer comes back looking for more because they've finally found a product that is healthier for their home. I'm grateful for their support as it allows me to work while also staying home with my kids.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
When the pandemic hit, I worried we would go under when we could no longer participate in farmers' markets and other events. I spent many hours learning to use social media to reach new customers, and thanks to them, rather than going under, I got to watch my business grow. It was a great feeling to see my business flourish online.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me is keeping up with social media and technology in general. I feel like things are always changing, and working to reach a new audience is getting harder. I am not the most computer savvy and struggle to learn at the pace things change.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Grab a book, grab lots of books. Whether it's about running a business or making a product, the information is invaluable.
- Write it down. The good, the bad, the ugly. When you write it down, not only will you prevent yourself from making the same mistake twice, but you'll also be able to look back and see how far you've come.
- Take photos, make memories, and never forget why you started.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Some days will be great, while others may be hard. Never forget why you started.
