Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tyler Patterson, founder of Ever Accountable, located in Draper, UT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We sell apps that help individuals and families to keep safe from pornography on their electronic devices. Our apps focus on being accountable to another person. Our main demographic is adults who are trying to kick a bad habit. We are currently expanding to also include parents who want to protect their children while also teaching them to make good choices on their own.
Tell us about yourself
I have loved writing software since I was 13 years old. When I graduated from college, I wanted to build something that I could also turn into a business. A friend suggested that I choose a product that had a niche big enough to support my family but small enough that it didn't have difficult competition from larger companies. This seemed to fit. I built the first version of Ever Accountable in my spare time. I now lead a team of around 16 people to build and expand the software. We recently started a nonprofit arm to help people in Fiji and other developing countries to stay safe from pornography. I love working on something that makes a difference in people's lives! I hear from my customers frequently about how my product is helping them regain their self-confidence, rebuild their marriages, and feel like they are honoring God.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I love that I can use my talents to better people's lives. I am also incredibly proud of the team of people who work with me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning to manage people has been especially challenging for me. My background did little to prepare me for this.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I am inspired by the way Elon Musk sets huge, even impossible-sounding goals and then works like crazy over decades to make them happen. I'm trying to do that too. If you believe in something, ignore the nay-sayer in your own head and do everything you can to make it a reality.
