Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Evan Roberts, Founder of Elemental Health and Wellness, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Health and Wellness Podcast host and Health and Wellness Coach. I create programs to help people of all ages and all backgrounds to develop and sustain health practices that they will use for the rest of their lives. I focus primarily on longevity (living to old age) while ensuring that my clients still enjoy their lives.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for Health and Wellness is derived from my childhood struggles with gastrointestinal issues such as IBS. With the medical system falling short in finding any cure for my GI problems, I turned to holistic practices, different types of diets, and lifestyle changes. I noticed an immediate change in my health and overall well-being, which sparked my desire to spread this knowledge to everyone who might be in my position. Hungry for change and willing to do whatever it took, but starved for the correct information. Then, of course, the world shut down for a few years in 2020 and forced a lot of people to become resourceful. Lacking work and tired of delivering food for Postmates, I decided it was time for a change. I saw so many people practicing even worse health practices during this period of time, such as higher alcohol consumption, eating more fast food, and exercising less. The answer was blatantly staring me in the face, so I began spreading health information through one of my favorite ways of digesting information, podcasts. I created the Elemental Evan Podcast almost 2 years ago. From there, I have also created multiple health and wellness programs to create health and lifestyle practices that people are actually able to follow and make a massive difference in their health. Just knowing that I might be helping even one person in this world motivates me every morning when I wake up and is one of the driving thoughts I draw from each time I record a new podcast episode.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was having the courage to even start. I began my business at a time when the world was completely shut down, and in-person meetings as we knew them no longer existed. The world was scared and unsure of what would happen, and I was working only to make ends meet with zero passion for the work. I had wanted for years to start a podcast and find a career I was passionate about, but I was always afraid to take the leap, to dedicate the time, or afraid to fail. This isn't to say that I haven't come across bumps in the road, unhappy people, or difficult times in my life, but these things can occur regardless if you have a business or not. The best advice I can give to people looking to start a business or follow a passion is to just start taking steps, regardless of how small they are.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think there are more difficulties that come with being a business owner than I have time to write about, but the main one that I've come across is actually managing myself. There are weeks I overwork myself, weeks when I lose all motivation, weeks when I feel depressed, and weeks when business is slow. All of these setbacks can be hard to recover from. I've had to learn not to take things so personally, learn that everything is temporary and that as long as you keep moving and doing the work, things eventually turn around. Therefore, I'd say that learning how to manage your mental/emotional health and understanding that you deserve days off as well is key to not falling into burnout.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! Small steps are still steps.
  2. Get really good at using a daily and weekly planner/stay super organized.
  3. Start offering your services even if they are free for the first few people. This gives you great practice and makes you feel more comfortable in your offerings.
