Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with G. Cheve' Bland, Owner of Eurnice Jean Candle Company, located in Saint Louis, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Eurnice Jean Candle Co. is a luxury home fragrance brand that specializes in soy candles, wax melts, and reed diffusers. We also present social candle-making events. Our customers are people who desire beautiful, clean fragrances in their homes.
Tell us about yourself
As a person with asthma and allergies, I struggled to find candles that I could burn without having a headache, non-stop sneezing, or causing an asthma attack. I would burn candles from other companies and would have to let the candle burn in a different room, and when the scent traveled to the room I was in, I would have to put the candle out.
I decided one day that I would make my own candle. After a lot of research, practice, and great feedback from people who visited my home (and smelled my candles), Eurnice Jean Candle Co. was born. I am motivated each day by helping other people who want clean burning candles and home fragrance systems without allergens and irritants.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been surviving Covid-19. Gratefully, our business continued to grow through the pandemic.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is constant learning. As my business grows, there is always something new to learn in order to make sure I am keeping up with the quality of my brand, managing social media, making candles, and bookkeeping.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Always talk about and represent your business; word of mouth is your largest and most affordable marketing.
- Stay organized! Keep up with all of your income and spending!
- Be flexible. Things will not always go as planned, be patient, graceful, and adjust as needed.
