What's your business, and who are your customers?

Essex Consulting, LLC is an HR consulting firm providing HR fractional support and project work, generally for small to mid-sized organizations. We partner with clients in the non-profit and for-profit industries and help these businesses achieve and meet their strategic priorities. We are proudly minority-owned and certified as a woman-owned small business.

Tell us about yourself

I have been doing HR work for over 25 years. I love what I do! The thing that motivates me each day is knowing that we are helping so many different organizations enhance their business practices and improve their overall employee experience. We are making an impact and a difference for other small businesses.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is maintaining operations and thriving after the pandemic. We have doubled our client base over the last two years, and I'm proud of our continued growth and stability.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a small business owner is balancing working in my business and working on my business. I still service clients, so delivering service while focusing on growth, managing a team, and gaining new clients is challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get the proper support. Make sure you find experts in HR, Accounting, Legal, Insurance, etc., who will help you build a strong foundation.
  2. Just do it. Don't try to wait for everything to be perfect. Take the risk, and you'll surprise yourself.
  3. Participate in professional groups and organizations. Network with other business owners - learn from each other.
