Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Willis, Founder of Mother Indica, located in Watkins Glen, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Basically, I am an educator. I teach women (and DTC brands) how to use cannabis as a wellness tool. My approach is to treat this medicinal plant as a nutritional supplement that can be added to any food plan. I am a practicing integrative nutritionist, cannabis coach, and mother of two boys, and I spill my heart and knowledge out onto my blog, Mother Indica. My audience is women and mothers from all walks of life looking to ditch the modern-day conventional lifestyle for something more original– nature-based without the reliance on corporate and pharmaceutical influence! Some call this alternative living; I believe it to be original to us human beings. :)
Tell us about yourself
I started as a lost, new mother experiencing postpartum depression. As an anonymous blogger, I shared how I coped with it through the use of medicinal cannabis. I became pregnant right after graduating college and could no longer complete my dream of becoming a registered dietitian. I took the knowledge and training I gained in conventional clinical nutrition and applied it to my own life in a creative, more natural way. I shared this information online as "Mother Indica."
My motivation to keep going is my children. When I had my firstborn, I was terrified of going back to work and leaving him at daycare every day. And although this did happen at first, I eventually was able to gain a full-time salary with my side job, Mother Indica, without having to work 40 hours a week away from my boys. I began as a blogger and consultant and have worn many hats to stay home with them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I am able to be with my children in their early years. I am able to fully support us as a family, which means my partner gets to spend more time with them too. I hope I can eventually retire him so I can go more full-time with my digital services and products!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I believe one of the greatest challenges of running an online business from my home is maintaining boundaries and honoring a healthy work-life balance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Keep going! Even if it's just jotting down ideas daily in a journal or focusing on a vision board to remind you of your dreams. Every baby step counts. I started six years ago and am still in the beginning phases, but I count these blessings and keep moving forward.
- Focus on, and pinpoint your big WHY. Why do you want to start this business? Who are you helping by doing this? What does your life look like once it starts? Once it's successful? When times get tough (and they will), you must hold onto the reason why you wanted this in the first place. For me, my biggest why is the time spent with my little ones. That is something I will never get back when I have to work for others. It's the very reason I don't give up when times get tough.
- To really succeed, you need to tap into what you LOVE to do. What makes you giddy and you'd do for free. Those are the skills you need to hone. They make you truly unique and untouchable. Everything else can be outsourced!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
There has never been a more opportunistic time for women entrepreneurs to thrive in creating and running their own businesses. What a time to be alive! Remember, you are in control of your life and where you want it to go. Own that and use it to your advantage, especially with creating an online business, something that needs very, very little overhead costs. I usually run my business while nursing my youngest. It is truly a unique time to thrive as an independent mother and woman.
