What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an indie rock musician based just outside Vancouver, BC, Canada. Thanks to streaming services like YouTube and Spotify, social media, etc., it's possible to reach a global audience.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up listening to rock music ranging from late 60's classic rock (The Beatles, The Animals, The Zombies, etc.) right through to contemporary bands (Twenty One Pilots, The Black Keys). However, as much as I loved music, I never imagined that actually creating music would be in my future. Fortunately, out of a growing need to explore the possibility, I set up a rudimentary home studio last year, and pretty much from that moment on, I found myself creating song after song.
That's really what motivates me--the drive to create, to express a thought or emotion through music.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While I'm pretty new to the game, I have received some very positive feedback, including a recent review for my debut album, "Guilty Party," from a London-based music site, calling it "probably one of the best albums I've heard in 2022". Comments like that are definitely encouraging and add fuel to the fire.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the creation process is really the easy part. It's the marketing and promotion that's easily the biggest challenge--Trying to get established and build up a following (which is why interviews like this are so helpful!).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I'd say that if it's something you're passionate about, then learn as much as you can about it and ask colleagues and people who you look up to for advice. Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes because they'll happen. Just make sure that you learn from your experiences and keep on going.
