Live More Balanced Lives - Equilibrium Coaching & Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Fisher Bruey, Principal and Founder of Equilibrium Coaching & Consulting, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Equilibrium Coaching & Consulting is a business that helps people and organizations who do good do better through human-centered coaching and training. We promote authentic leadership and combat burnout for mission-driven people. Central to our work is the belief that connection to ourselves and our reactions fosters innovative, resilient leadership and finding more joy and balance in life. Our clients are managers, career shifters, and organizations looking to build holistic, human-centered systems.

Tell us about yourself

For over 18 years, I worked in the non-profit sector, helping emerging global leaders level up their skills. While the programs I worked on were amazing, more often than not, the people working on them would become burnt out because there wasn't an emphasis on internal leadership. Studies show that 57% of employees leave their job because of their boss. It's clear that there is a need for a mechanism to help non-profit program managers also become effective managers of people. In seeing this need, I decided to start Equilibrium.

My innate curiosity about others and passion for social justice, and positive leadership motivate me to work on Equilibrium every day. I love talking to people and figuring out why they make the choices they make. Nothing brings me more joy than a client having an 'aha' moment. When this 'aha' moment can also increase the longevity of someone's career in the non-profit sphere, I believe that it also drives positive change. It's a double win! Getting to use my non-profit management experience alongside my love for people is a privilege that I am grateful for everyday.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is helping my clients understand themselves better and make choices that align with their purpose. It really does help bring them more balance and joy!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is running both the business and the content. It's your own marketing, legal, tech, and finance department while also trying to stay on top of all of the content that makes the business special.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I would give to anyone looking to start, run, or grow a business today are:

  1. Be bold. You invest half and expect to get back more than half.
  2. Reach out to your connections for support.
  3. Don't be shy about asking for advice.
