Dare to Heal - Epic Herbalism
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tania Oceana, Founder of Epic Herbalism, located in Portland, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I offer my knowledge as an Herbalist in written form, videos, local herb walks, and 1-on-1 video consultations. I work with and love providing value to anyone interested in holistic health, wild foraging, traditional remedies, survival skills, and anyone looking for support in their healing journey.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Pacific NorthWest nature nerd who has always been drawn to forests, rivers, and quiet mossy places. When I experienced my own health concerns in early adulthood, I felt there's got to be more than what the conventional healthcare model is providing. I started to dive into holistic health, nutrition, and Traditional Western Herbalism. Seeing the benefits of their wisdom got me hooked! It's been over 10 years since then, and my thirst for knowledge only continues. I want everyone to remember that our body is on our side, it's built to heal, and it's communicating with us all the time. Listen, and dare to heal.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment recently is one client I worked with who told me months later that, with my help, she had weaned off her medications and was feeling better than she had in years. My heart sang because sometimes you lose touch with a client and don't know how they are doing. This woman overcame so many mental, emotional and physical obstacles to grow into a more authentic, more alive, and happy version of herself, and it's just absolutely beautiful to see! Everyone has that power within them, and simply holding the hand of someone while they go through this transformation is an honor.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The business side of it! I love teaching, helping people, and being with plants. As a one-woman small business, I have to stay on my toes when it comes to marketing, spreadsheets, and all of that. However, even if my herb walks aren't the most profitable use of my time, I still love them and will continue to offer them in an accessible way for the long term. I'm choosing slow and steady growth while staying true to my values, and I'm grateful that I can!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I would say read, learn and ask for advice from people who know what they are talking about. Know that variation is the name of the game. Some days/weeks/months/years will be a lot busier/profitable/difficult, and try to stay flexible. And lastly, make sure this is something you are passionate about because, like a healthy relationship, you will be making sacrifices, but the reward beyond money has to be worth it.
