Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in language education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert Haggart, Founder of English for Life, located in Montpellier, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We boost the English communication skills of people working in the I.T. sector.

Tell us about yourself

Ten years ago, I met Lylia. She came to Canada from France to learn English. Back then, I worked in Marketing for a multinational. We had decided that I would speak to her only in English. In 6 months, she had made tremendous improvements. When we moved to France, I decided I would similarly teach English. I'd focus on habits and lifestyle to get the clients interested in learning the language for life and not for school. That's how English for Life started.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having helped thousands of clients gain confidence in their English communication skills.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding time to balance family life with work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have enough cash to sustain years of not generating enough income.
  2. Move fast. Test and learn.
  3. Find a partner and hire someone who can do what you're not good at so you can focus on what you're great at.
