Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal & business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luis Duque, Motivational Speaker of Engineering our Future, located in Rapid City, SD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

It is interesting how much you learn by teaching others. Since 2020, I have produced over 100 podcast episodes and reached over 10,000 students and young engineers with my courses and content.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Colombia, so I think I have always had some entrepreneurial desire since I was little. I also enjoy volunteering with professional organizations, which is where I got the idea of starting the podcast. I was getting a lot of questions about career development, and I knew I could help a lot of engineers with my content.

What I enjoy the most about what I do is creating connections with other engineers. Either by interviewing them, listening to the podcast, or helping them with the courses and community. It is crazy to me that I can sit behind the microphone talking to interesting people, and thousands of people are listening on the other end.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The most rewarding aspect of what I do is hearing other engineers apply what I am sharing, and it works. It helps them get a raise, a better job, or even pass their licensure exams.

Learning as I go is the best way I can grow Engineering our Future. Not only that, but I constantly learn new things from the community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the most challenging thing right now is my limited time. I am still a full-time bridge engineer and father of 3 kids. I can't spend much time on business, so I need to maximize what I do and focus on what matters.

I have been blessed to have a very supportive wife and others around me who have joined the team and helped in some aspects of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and focus on what you enjoy.
  2. Listen to your community and grow where you see the need.
  3. Don't compare your outcome to others. Focus on making the best content/product you can.

Bonus: Don't be afraid to delegate tasks and hire part-time help.
