Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ena Abel-Mireles, Director of Bloom Music Studio, located in Portland, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run and teach kids and some adults to play musical instruments and/ or sing. My customers come mostly from the neighborhood where I live but also from some neighborhoods close by in North East Portland.
Tell us about yourself
My father owned his own business, and my mother was very musical but only self-taught. She started me in piano lessons when I was six. When I was 13, my mother took her life at age 30. I was devastated. Music has been one of the ways to feel closer to her, and working for myself has always been natural because I have never needed someone to get me going to get things done.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing young people learn about themselves and grow. I'm kind of a life lesson kind of teacher since I'm also a degree historian and social scientist. I look at everything through a social science lens. And I share the values I learned with the kids. Plus, I genuinely love every child and believe I have failed them if I don't give them my best.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing lately about being a business owner has been juggling everything since my estrogen has begun changing as I age. So, my answer is perimenopause.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be ready to have to wear tons of hats! I hate being an accountant, but until I make enough to pay someone, it's my job. Also, I have found so much success at just charging no more than what I'm worth. I treat every customer with dignity and show them my appreciation for them choosing me all the time. There are so many choices out there; nobody has to patronize you. But, if clients feel valued, they will make you a priority for their family. Love always wins.
