I am a creative entrepreneur and team leader who has focused on the sales and success of companies, including HR tech, fintech, sports tech, Software-as-a-Service, as well as cannabis (CBD / THC), nutrition, health and wellness, fitness corporations, and business of all sizes with love for helping business grow and scale from $500k to north of $50m. Tell us about yourself
I am unemployable. I am an entrepreneur. Always have been. Always will be. I can't say I know what got me started on this entrepreneurial journey. Possibly seeing my mother and stepfather, who owned a real estate company while working, may have had an influence. But I have always wanted to make and do things to impact others. After a few successful and failed companies, it was all over. I was hooked. In university, I made workout shirts and sold them. I also created course grad shirts for my unit with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. Super rewarding. Since then, I have built and sold, successfully and unsuccessfully, several companies in health & wellness, fitness, nutrition, HR tech, fintech, cannabis, and more.
I am an advisor, mentor, board member to many clients and accelerators, including Altitude Accelerator and Futurpreneur, where I get to experience and be excited about other entrepreneurs' journeys. Every day, I work on my own companies and projects. Every day I get to work with and help other entrepreneurs.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Built and sold an HR tech firm from 0 to nearly 200 small, mid, and enterprise companies in 23 months, acquired by one of the five companies I listed as an exit when we launched the company. Even more exciting, we got offers from 4 of the five companies I listed.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a leader for your teams. It's hard when everyone is counting on you. It's no longer your company; you work to ensure you don't fail to ensure the success of others. They are counting on you. The second is managing the work-life balance. More specifically, the family, personal health and happiness, and business building life of entrepreneurship.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be passionate about what you are doing. Believe in yourself; you can do it.
- Be the best you can be at everything. Give everything 100%.
- Out HUSTLE everyone, be empowered, and be the best at what you do with integrity.
- BONUS... paper everything, don't let your partner steal your equity, learn from my experience, or just do it yourself and retain your equity.
