Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma Sartwell, CEO of Somatic Spiritual Counseling, located in Boulder, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run Somatic Spiritual Counseling, a collective of body and mindfulness-based therapists and coaches. We offer contemplative counseling focused on the presence of nervous system healing and relationship to ourselves, others, and the natural world. We help unwind old patterns from the bottom up, leading to more energy, empowerment, and intimacy. We often work with people who have been in talk therapy for many years and are ready to go a level deeper in their healing and self-discovery. Maybe they know their story and why they act the way they do, but their bodies and nervous systems still won't shift out of old habits and familiar patterns. That's where we come in! The power of nervous system awareness can lead to incredible changes in how we see ourselves and how much freedom we have to make the choices we want to make rather than being governed by past imprints.
Tell us about yourself
As one of my teachers likes to say, I am a devotee of truth. I've always been an explorer and researcher, but when I hit emotional rock bottom in college, I dedicated myself to exploring meditation, spirituality, and psychology -- some of the many ways humans have discovered to work with ourselves, our minds, and our emotions. I am so lucky now to be able to explore what it means to be human with my clients every day and to see them heal and grow.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Moving from private practice to group practice was a big leap. Leading a team requires a whole different set of skills than running a business of one. I am proud to now be heading a team of seven coaches, therapists, and counselors. We all come from a similar vantage point, but we each have our own niche, our own piece of the puzzle that we bring to the company. I am so grateful to my team for the hard work and enthusiasm they bring to their jobs every day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Figuring out what work is mine to do and what work to delegate is a challenge! As a business owner, I want to have my finger on the pulse of all aspects of my business: finance, marketing, sales, client retention, website design, on and on. But over time, of course, these tasks need to start being delegated out. I'm still learning when and how to find the right balance there.
