Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Nielsen, Owner of Boise Goat Yoga, located in Boise, ID, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I offer lighthearted, legit yoga classes and wellness retreats in Idaho. I am the owner of Boise Goat Yoga, where I lead fun and uplifting outdoor classes in our back acreage with our nine goats! My customers are open to nurturing and holistic experiences that will leave them feeling renewed and inspired.
Tell us about yourself
I'm an optimist by nature, and I love to write, share, and move with joyful intentions.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In 2015, I converted a shop in our backyard into a wellness studio and retreat center and rehomed four Pygmy goats from a friend the same year. My first goat yoga classes were presented as a bit of a joke, and they sold out in a day. Since then, Boise Goat Yoga has become a thriving, community-oriented experience on our beautiful property in the heart of Boise.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am too much of a space cadet to remain dedicated to checking my emails on a daily basis. I'd rather be out and about inventing new playshops and experiences! It's also in my nature to be a people-pleaser, and it has been challenging for me to become a stickler for my policies and not give in to the pressure to bow to others' wants when it doesn't fit my schedule or procedures. But, once I learned that my business directly correlates with my principles, it made me more respectable not only to the community but to myself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Trust the process, and know that the path will be filled with twists, bumps, and disappointments. If you believe in what you're doing, it will be easier to keep going.
- Pick something that you'd enjoy doing. No idea is too crazy
if it's something you would find enjoyable, chances are, there are others who will, too! - Be true to yourself. Know your limits and what areas you'll need assistance in - whether it be budgeting, time management, or promotion.
