Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Boyes, Co-Founder of Threshold Coaching & Consulting, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Threshold is a coaching and consulting agency based on the unceded traditional Lekwungen & W̱SÁNEĆ territories, commonly known as Victoria, BC. Threshold Coaching and Consulting offers Co-Active leadership in-person and virtual coaching services for people looking to transform the way they live and lead. At Threshold, we believe everyone is a leader. Through coaching, we help individuals develop leadership skills and the social and emotional intelligence needed to be a leader today. Through empowering conversation and compelling action, people walk away from coaching more resilient and better equipped to take on the everyday demands of life and its challenges.

Our mission is to empower and support individuals to develop the leadership skills and social and emotional intelligence needed to be a leader. Our vision is a world where people possess self-efficacy, or the belief in one's own ability, and feel empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives and communities.

Tell us about yourself

As a young adult, I spent over ten years guiding youth through the Canadian wilderness on expedition-style canoe trips while helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence. My experience as a canoe guide led me to discover that a canoe trip is simply a container for inner journey work that has no boundaries. This discovery led me to pursue coaching through the Co-Active Training Institute's (CTI) coaching program. Upon completing the program, I founded Threshold Coaching in 2020.

I am motivated by my clients and partners! The relationship between coach and client is powerful and immensely rewarding. Supporting my clients as they work through challenges and begin to understand how they can be better, more effective leaders in today's multi-dimensional world is an experience I wouldn't trade!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Last year I secured a partnership with Outward Bound Canada as a coach-facilitator for their Training Academy, which provides accessible and inclusive training for aspiring outdoor educators. Through their innovative model, OBC and Threshold are working together to change the outdoor sector into a more inclusive and representative industry.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to turn down business because of limited capacity! As a new company, Threshold is still small and can't always say yes to business and opportunity. Hopefully, that will change in the near future as we continue to grow the biz and our team.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient with yourself. With consistent effort and time, you'll reach your goals!
  2. Hire a coach - it's never a bad idea!
  3. Don't be afraid to dream big or share your goals with others. If you believe in yourself, others will believe in you too!
