Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jorim Holtey-Weber, Founder of Emerge to Prosper, located in Vinaròs, Castellón, Spain.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm working with people in leadership positions, typically (co-) founders, heads, or CXOs. They start working with me because they want to "have it all" even though society tells them that's not possible: be successful financially, have great relationships, be healthy, enjoy their hobbies, have time off, etc.

Tell us about yourself

During my BSc in Psychology, I fell in love with personal development. I consumed a lot of information, implemented it in my own life, and indirectly inspired others to do the same. Later, I learned about coaching and fell in love again. How can there be such a simple way to improve someone else's life? In the end, it's "just" a conversation, but it can make all the difference! It lights me up to be that person who holds space, asks well-timed questions, and offers to free perspectives... and, by that, catalyses the quality of life of my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

First and foremost, being still in business. It's not easy, especially in an ever-changing world. Apart from that, it's the collaboration invitations that I've received. From mentoring startups in Qatar at the Arab Innovation Academy to recording a course for a big US business school and being invited to lead panel discussions for Europe's biggest startup event, Startup Olé. These kinds of opportunities show me the value I'm creating in the world, and the trust people have in my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Dealing with uncertainty.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fail forward. You're never going to achieve what you want just by thinking. You've got to act. The more and faster you act, the more likely you will find what's working - for you and your customers.
  2. Get a mentor. When I first founded a language school, I didn't have a mentor to tell me what to pay attention to. We managed, but it was hard. Having a mentor or a coach can drastically decrease your stress and increase your likelihood of success.
  3. Prove your concept before investing. Make money as quickly as possible, potentially with pre-sales. Don't wait until you have a fully developed product or service to notice people actually want something else. The best proof people will buy from you is that they already pay you.
