Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patti Brock, owner of Emerald & Pearl LLC., located in Royal Oak, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a specialty shop for women, and we have a little for the gents! We carry small companies and designers who produce smaller lines and would not cater to chain stores or big box stores. We believe that is the responsibility of the true boutique shopping experience. Customer service and dedication to the individualist in you is our goal.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career in retail back in 1983. I worked for two other local boutiques whose mission was much the same as mine, and I saw that this goal is what stands the test of time. After gathering the experience in others' boutiques, I realized that I could and wanted to do it myself. My store has always been more than just a store. We have and strive to maintain close relationships with our clients while keeping things fun and interesting. Gives gals a reason to come and shop, see what's new, have a coffee, and play dress-up. Who wouldn't want to do that?!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Not only maintaining an incredible client base as I have clients that have been shopping with me for all of the soon-to-be 30 years in business. That's some staying power! Also, I am very conscious that I have a platform to reach out to my community and serve them in various ways as well.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Retail is not for the faint of heart. It swings; it sways. You must realize that each day will be different. You must be steadfast in your commitment to style and not be driven by trends in order to serve the masses.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Find a niche-be different. Don't overbuy. Remember why you wanted to do it and do it with passion! Do what you do best and delegate the rest. You don't have the answers to everything. Be yourself on social media. You can have many followers, but if they don't have a good experience, it doesn't matter how many followers you have.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Small businesses rule! It's where people remember you. You aren't a number or faceless. No one online will remember that you bought a pair of shoes last year that will go with a dress you are purchasing today.
