Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian McAvoy, Founder of Elmbrook Psychiatry, located in Menomonee Falls, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Elmbrook Psychiatry is upscale concierge psychiatry. Headquartered in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, we have locations in Milwaukee, Madison, Waukesha, and Middleton, Wisconsin. My clients seek the highest quality of mental health care, and we prioritize the client's experience above anything else.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Brian McAvoy. I am a board-certified psychiatric provider. I started my business because I recognized the need for a private practice alternative to the bloated behemoth healthcare systems. I deeply understand the client's need for quality specialized care. Like many clients, providing for and caring for my family is of the utmost importance. I saw firsthand the limitations of the healthcare system as my mother, with Alzheimer's disease, struggled to find efficient and competent care. I understand the client's need for reliable, quality healthcare on a personal level.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The meteoric rise of Elmbrook Psychiatry has been exhilarating, and demand for our services has vastly exceeded my wildest imagination. Many clients struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia believed they were in hopeless irredeemable situations. Yet, they could achieve complete symptom remission through medication management and psychotherapy much quicker than generally anticipated durations. The most gratifying experience is when a client leaves a fruit basket with a note stating that I saved his 20-year marriage or a letter from someone who was able to slay her dragons of addiction and trauma.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time management can be a double-edged sword. A psychiatric practice at the highest echelon requires an indefatigable work ethic and the discipline to perform at the highest level consistently. When time was scarce, self-care was secondary to the business's greater good. Finding your work-life balance is challenging and will require a certain degree of trial and error until it is perfect.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take an inventory of yourself. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. A business that reflects your most extraordinary talents and abilities are more likely to succeed than any alternative.
- You must have devotion. The willingness to work many thankless and unappreciated hours is necessary for your business to thrive.
- Have a growth mindset. Even when you genuinely enjoy the fruits of your labor, there is never an honestly justifiable reason to lose the passion and discipline that made for a successful business in the first place.
