Global Beauty Private Label Skincare - Ellen Clark

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and beauty but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ellen Clark, CEO of Global Beauty Private Label Skincare, located in Irvine, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started Global Beauty Private Label Skincare as a second business because we kept getting requests to help people brand their own skincare line. Our customers are spa owners, estheticians, med spas, and e-commerce entrepreneurs who see the opportunity to grow with their own line.

Tell us about yourself

When I first because a licensed esthetician and rented a room years ago, I private labeled a few products as I wanted to build my own brand. I saw the value of brand loyalty and knew one day I would start a brand and then offer this to others who wanted the types of products (high-performance, premium formulations) we made. I love working with growing business owners who want to add these types of products that really can help transform and improve the skin. Because we make it easy and affordable with low minimums, our clients really can get started and realize their dream of having their own product range.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is how I have weathered the challenges over the years. I started in 1997 in a home office when my daughter was just six months old with a tight budget. Now my daughter is 24 and working in the business!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is learning how to manage your team and keep everyone focused on their goals so that you can achieve your objectives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get some financial literacy (understand a P & L, balance sheet, budgeting, and costs)
  2. Network with other entrepreneurs (examples: National Association of Women Business Owners, your local SBA office, EO, industry groups)
  3. Have experience in the field and/or do research so you understand the opportunity as well as challenges that could come up.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I spent the first 15 years as an entrepreneur, like a hamster on a wheel, always feeling like I had "push" myself to be successful. In hindsight, I realized that I did not need to beat myself up like that. It caused stress and was not healthy. Being an entrepreneur can be stressful, but be kind to yourself and know that there will be ups and downs, and that is all part of the process, but it is so very worth it!
