Interested in starting your own journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Williams, Founder of Southern Food & Beverage Museum, located in New Orleans, LA, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

The formal name of the nonprofit is the National Food & Beverage Foundation, which includes the Southern Food & Beverage Museum and the SoFAB Research Center. Our customers are everyone who eats and drinks.

Tell us about yourself

I feel so fortunate that I love what I do, so I never go to work. I have always been fascinated by the culture of food and was motivated to open the Southern Food & Beverage Museum because it needed to exist.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

We have survived as a museum through many rough times, and we have survived. We are one of the few food museums in the US and even the world. Our reputation as a serious institution has grown. We are the intellectual overlay of food in a great food city.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being an organization?

The hardest thing is being the place where the buck stops. You are in charge of everything.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Love it.
  2. Don't give up. Persist and be stubborn.
  3. Take care of yourself so that you don't burn out.
