Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Skronski, Founder of Mindfulness for Well Being, located in Niagara, ON, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Mindfulness for Well Being is a coaching and workshop facilitation company focused on helping people manage their minds so they can get to a level of clarity and calmness that naturally brings greater happiness and well-being.
Our clients are all courageous people ready to tackle the challenge of managing their minds because, let's face it... It's not an easy task to do.
We've worked with leaders, professionals, and individuals, helping them develop a mindful mindset and an inspiring and compassionate presence using proven transformational mindfulness techniques. As a result, our clients experience greater clarity of mind, focus, and calmness, allowing them to make better decisions, find better solutions and have a greater positive impact.
Tell us about yourself
You know when you reach the pinnacle of what you think is a success, and somehow it's not quite what you thought it would be... Well, that's me! Having reached an executive-level job, which I thought would bring great satisfaction, instead, I doubted myself and my abilities, so I overworked to compensate. The result: A burnout so bad that the only way I could see out of it was to quit my job ( and I'm no quitter)... So I did leave and asked, what now? When I started meditating, I started feeling calmer, clearer, and happier... And I realized that I had lost my initial love and passion for helping people. I'm a nurturer by nature; it's important that people around me be happy ...So I decided I would reconnect with that passion and become certified in developmental coaching and mindfulness facilitation.
I want to be part of a better, kinder, more compassionate world. And being aware of ourselves and our impact on everyone around us leads us to that kinder world. That's what motivates me every day!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Contributing to my client's well-being is certainly a major accomplishment. When I get a " Thanks, Elizabeth, for challenging me, for sharing your wisdom" type of email, I know I've made a difference. But without having had the courage to look in the mirror, realize I wasn't happy, face my fears, leave my corporate job and start my consulting firm, all of this positive impact on my clients and the world around me would not have happened.
Another accomplishment I am proud of is going to a 10-day silent meditation retreat... which means no phone, social media, or interaction. I became so much stronger after these 10 days that I would recommend to everyone to do one. And soon, in September 2022, I will be walking the Camino de Santiago, a 285 kilometers walk from Porto to Santiago, Spain.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a business owner is no small feat, and there are lots of hard things about it, but I think having trust in ourselves, our abilities, and our gut is quite difficult. Not being afraid to ask for help and taking the step to hire the expertise is also difficult. I'm a coach, not an accountant! So why would I want to spend precious time doing accounting when I can spend it helping people!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be clear and know why you want to start and run your own business. Unless you know what inspires and motivates you, it will be difficult to maintain the momentum and keep the self-doubts away.
- Be humble and recognize you will not know everything, and that's okay. Reach out to others with more experience, ask questions, and do not fear failure or rejection. They are not saying no to you, only to your product or service.
- Breathe, breathe and breathe. Stress will be inevitable. Taking three mindful breaths throughout the day will help manage the stress and will help you get re-focused and stay positive.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Family and friends are great at advising from their perspective, BUT they are not objective. They might discourage you or be so enthusiastic about your success that you actually don't move forward because you're afraid of letting them down...
So hire a coach who will be totally objective, challenge you, hold your hands when you doubt yourself, and help you find the clarity and inspiration needed.
