Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dana DeVito, COO & Business Consultant of Elite Performance Associates, located in Prescott, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a business consultant and coach working with business owners and executives who look to better understand the technical aspect of their operations and finances as well as grow individuals in capacity and leadership.

Tell us about yourself

I am currently the COO of Elite Performance Associates. I have over 20+ years of experience in management and operations across a broad range of industries, including Medical, Food Service, Engineering, and Technology. Additionally, I have owned and operated my own franchise businesses in the restaurant and coffee industries in Arizona. After obtaining my MBA in Technology Management, I focused on working with small startup companies, ultimately leading me to venture out on my own. I've learned first-hand how to successfully operate a business from the ground level while learning the nuances of growing employees into great leaders.

My grassroots experience drives my deep passion and clarity for coaching and consulting businesses nationwide. I specialize in the process of helping others find their direction, accomplish proper execution, and grow in scale.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is helping develop my staff members grow from "technicians" within the organization to leaders able to help and grow and develop team members on their own.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult things about being a business owner is recognizing that your shoulders must remain broad and that your voice, vision, guidance, and support can never be silent.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the best people you can and empower them to be effective at their roles and allow them to accomplish great things.
  2. Manage your variable costs, not to the exclusion of your growth opportunities but as a way to navigate an ever-changing landscape.
  3. Build for your exit. From operations to finances to people, plan and systematize your succession. Whether you have an immediate goal or never plan to leave, at least it will give you a choice when you want or need it, and it will allow you to pour into the people around you.
