Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nancy Davison, Owner of Elite Integrated Medicine, located in Raleigh, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have a private practice that focuses on wellness - encouraging my clients to understand their concerns from a mind, body, and spiritual/emotional level. Support them with acupuncture, physical therapy, and movements based on Qigong and Zero Balancing, a unique form of bodywork that addresses patient discomfort at a skeletal level.
Tell us about yourself
My career began as a physical therapist working with patients in their homes with an emphasis on their functional needs. I returned to school for a Master's in Public Health and ultimately returned to physical therapy, finding joy in helping people regain independence. I became interested in Eastern philosophies and spiritual understanding taught by Unity Church.
After attending a National Physical Therapy and meeting another PT who had attended Acupuncture School, Bingo! 6 months later, I moved to Maryland from Raleigh, where I completed a Master's Degree in Acupuncture. There I learned firsthand about Qigong for managing pain and the skill of Zero Balancing. By combining my skills and some coaching, clients understand their 'problem' from a different perspective and begin to take responsibility for their own healing. My life and work have a clear purpose - a meaningful direction.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Working on my own, rather than struggling to work under someone else's vision, I created my own approach to patient care. This approach has been effective with a variety of clients, from veterans who struggle with a wide range of disabilities, individuals with chronic illness, and folks who have lost touch with meaning in their lives.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Cash flow and paperwork associated with approval for treatments and reimbursement.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be clear about your 'product' - purpose, outcome.
- Be passionate - love what you do.
- Be realistic about the cost of operating your business vis-a-vis potential income.
