Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Micky Kerwick, Founder of Elevate Influence, located in Charleston, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Elevate is for the team leads, people managers, and entrepreneurs who have done so much to excel and arrive where they currently are only to find themselves saying, "I know I'm capable of more - but the same tricks aren't working. Now what?". Through 1-on-1 coaching and group facilitation sessions, Elevate Influence offers Communication, Sales, and Leadership skills training. It all starts with how you influence yourself, and then we build to how you influence others and, ultimately, how you influence an organization.
Tell us about yourself
I have a really hard time seeing untapped or unmet potential. I also live to "teach" people. That passion followed me around the industry by industry and role by role my whole career. New worlds open when we can create a lightbulb moment for someone - a team or individual - and see their perspective shift. Then good things start to happen.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Lately, my biggest accomplishment has felt like my newfound ability to go with the flow of a changing world, business landscape, environment, etc. I used to look for what was stable and predictable as a measure of success. Over the last two years, I've learned that the flexible and agile ones are often the success holders. I'm continuing to deepen into this as a business owner and leader.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest thing has always been tolerating failure. Failure as defined by yourself, failure as defined by outside criticism, even disconnect with friends and family you wish understood the business you were building. Entrepreneurship can feel incredibly lonely at times, and you have to be able to take that regularly.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You'll never be short of ideas, feedback or criticism. Learn to listen for valuable examples and be quick to dismiss the less useful.
- Create a small, tight, and incredibly impactful circle of allies. Lean on them often.
- Remind yourself often (like, schedule it on your calendar!) what your biggest motivator is - when you lose sight of your WHY things go south quickly.
