Make an Impact on Your Career Path - Elena Giorgetti

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elena Giorgetti, Founder of Make an Impact Career Coaching, located in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Career Coach and Career Specialist. My clients are mid-career professionals who feel lost in their careers and want to make an intentional change that can positively impact their lives.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in HR, and I worked in Career Development for 11 years. In my previous job, I was a Career Strategist at the UBC Sauder School of Business in Vancouver, BC. My role was interesting and fulfilling, and I really liked helping young students and university graduates find their own career paths. After 11 years at the university, though, I felt stuck in my career. I knew I wanted something different and would have liked to expand my reach as a coach and work with a more varied audience. The pandemic hit, and I started to work from home. That and other factors led me to review my life as a whole, and I decided I would start my own business adventure as an independent coach.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I still think that the biggest accomplishment is starting! Every day or month is different from the other, and it's constant learning from quality fails and successes. That's what I like about being on my own!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is to stay focused on your goals and purpose. With so many competitors - specifically in the coaching world, it is difficult to tune out all the noise from what others are doing on social media or elsewhere. This can bring to self-doubt or lack of confidence sometimes. Aside from that, having to take care of every aspect of the business is also a challenge. It's constant learning there as well!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your instinct but don't improvise.
  2. Find other people who can support you.
  3. Just do it!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I recommend creating an honest budget that is going to provide you and your loved ones some stability. If you are on your own, maybe don't leave your job all at once. Rather start your business on the side until you see it can fully replace your income. If you are contributing to your family income, have an honest conversation with your partner to figure out realistic needs and expectations: being an entrepreneur can be a roller-coaster, and you will need your partner to be fully onboard with you.
