Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zach Overcashier, Owner of Elderwise Organics, located in Cape Coral, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Elderwise Organics is a superfoods company that focuses on high-quality products that are ethically harvested. Our customers are those savvy consumers that are health-minded.

Tell us about yourself

When I first started down the entrepreneur path, it was mainly based on wanting to provide more for our family, give to charity, and help others from our own health journeys. Knowing that the values we held true at the beginning still are just as strong today motivates us to continue on. The customer’s testimonies were the fuel that I needed to know that it was worthwhile and people’s lives were being enhanced, healed, and renewed, much like my own story of changing to a more healthy lifestyle.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to retire from corporate America after almost a decade and being able to run multiple successful companies from a financial perspective and an ethical standpoint.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Taxes and accounting, it always helps to have expert help in these areas, but it still can be an exhausting effort. Keeping good records is key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. This is an unpopular tip but one I truly believe in. You don’t need to “go all in” to start with. You don’t need to risk everything, quit your day job, and have no outs. I conservatively built our companies over 9 years while working for corporate America.
  2. Know that it’s a lot of work, dedication, and sacrifice. I use the iceberg illustration, where the top is what everyone wants and sees, the success. There is a lot more ice under the water that most won’t see, the failures, late nights, organization, dedication, and sacrifices that make the top float.
  3. Growth is only going to come from learning how to scale, the strategies, and logistics and relying on others that will need to be brought in. Finding an A team in every category that makes logical and financial sense are the ingredients to grow.
  4. Sales are king. They will tell you what to do and what to move on from. A great idea or product is only as good as what the consumers think, test everything, and the people will tell you with their purchasing power.
