Inspired by Real Women - EH Affirmations

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Harrington, Owner of EH Affirmations, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I sell decks of affirmation cards and merchandise inspired by real women I have crossed paths with through my own business-building journey.

Tell us about yourself

I am a mom of two girls who was determined not to lose my identity when I had kids. I connected with other women through social media and started asking them what advice they would pass along to other women navigating pregnancy and parenting alongside their careers. It has turned into an incredible collection of affirmations, each linked to a real woman you can look up and connect with when you are inspired by her words.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been the opportunity for connection that these cards create throughout the increased isolation families have been faced with over the last few years. I have spoken to so many women that are moved by the cards they pull and are now creating genuine connections with women who want to cheer each other on.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest parts is navigating the fact that you are pulled in so many directions as a parent and business owner. Understanding that some days your business goals have to take a back seat to prioritize your family, and some days you have to miss family activities to put on your business hat is a never-ending battle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be driven by the problem you are solving, not the solution you are offering. This will help you adapt as a business owner if the needs of your customers change.
  2. Value your time and your skills. Often we forget to factor in the value of our time when pricing our products or services or undervalue the cost of our time.
  3. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Whether it is putting your face on social media, or talking about your business to others, step out of your comfort zone to grow your business.
