Rejuvenated, Natural Results - EFFACÈ Aesthetics

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roberta Moradfar, founder of EFFACÈ Aesthetics, located in Santa Monica, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called EFFACÉ (pronounced ef-fah-say) Aesthetics. We are a boutique medical spa located in the heart of Santa Monica. We cater to a diverse clientele seeking medical-grade skincare and advanced aesthetics services such as laser treatments and injections. Many clients seek our services for ethnic skincare and aesthetics because of our expertise and reputation in treating people of color. We help make people feel more confident about their appearance by giving them rejuvenated, natural results. We get to know our clients on an intimate level since we focus on dedicating more time to their individual services, unlike other med spas.

Tell us about yourself

As a nurse, I have always had a strong desire to take care of people. I’ve learned that when people look better, they tend to feel better. Beauty services go away more than just skin deep. It can help boost your self-esteem and confidence, and it can make an impact on how you’re able to treat others, especially the people you care for. We tend to see people neglecting themselves in the self-care department and the negative effects it can have on their emotional and psychosocial state.

My favorite part of my job is when my client looks in the mirror and is overjoyed with their results, and I don’t mind when they burst into a happy cry, lol! There should be nothing wrong with people loving how they look and feel about themselves. My favorite saying is, “self-care is not vanity, it's sanity.”

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest accomplishment is the quality of the employees and clients at EFFACÉ Aesthetics. We have a strong team of practitioners that truly love what they do, and it shows day-to-day during our interactions with our clients. We know that we’re making a huge impact on their lifestyle when they come in. Their results are proof that they are following our recommended regimen and continue to seek our services because they see their lasting results and the progression that they have made.

We have loyal clients who have made monthly visits since we opened in 2016. The amount of referrals and word-of-mouth we have received through those clients is the biggest compliment and reward we could ever ask for, that I am truly proud of and will never take for granted.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being accountable for everything that occurs in your business, regardless of the circumstances. There are times that I wish I could turn and look to someone else to take care of an issue, but then I realize that as the owner, I don’t have the luxury of passing the issue off to “the boss” because I am the boss. Also, given that I am a practitioner at the spa, it can be hard to juggle administrative duties when I’m so busy giving direct patient care.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not do it solely for the money. Starting a business often requires a lot of financial commitment, and you may not see a return on your investment for many years to come. So if this is not a true passion or something that you love, it is not wise to get into something that you don’t enjoy since it may not even pay off immediately.
  2. Save your money. This is the time to commit to investing in your business fully. Also, let all of your friends and family know your plans so that they can either invest in your business or help support your business while you’re starting. It’s OK to start small and grow along the way.
  3. Do not give up! There will be many things that will not go your way. There will be many things that you will have to do over. If it were easy, everybody would do it. So allow room for trial and error; you may lose some money and energy, but don’t lose your motivation and drive to succeed!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It helps when you are passionate about your business because you will be your best walking billboard. When you love what you do, it makes it easier to want to research how to learn to run all aspects of your business. As an entrepreneur, you’ll find that you’re going to wear many hats until you’re able to afford to hire outside help and delegate certain duties that you don’t necessarily enjoy or feel you do as well. That way, you can focus on your talents and expend your energy on what you truly enjoy doing for your business.
