What's your business, and who are your customers?

In addition to being a co-founder of The Golandsky Institute, I have a coaching business based on my work with the Taubman Approach. I hold masterclasses, give lectures, conduct private lessons, and create instructional materials for pianists and instrumentalists around the world.

Tell us about yourself

After working alongside Dorothy Taubman for many years, in 2003, I co-founded The Golandsky Institute with three of my best students. My goal is to help share and further the groundbreaking work of the Taubman Approach, which helps pianists and other instrumentalists solve their problems and allows for unimaginable development and growth in their playing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, the great accomplishment of my business is getting people out of pain and freeing them of limitations and frustrations when playing. For example, recently, someone came with upper arm, shoulder, and neck pain.

When they came to me, they were hoping to just get rid of the pain, but in the process of working together and correcting it, which is done by replacing incorrect motions with correct ones, this student was able to perform one of the most difficult pieces in the repertoire with an orchestra successfully!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me personally, one of the greatest difficulties I’ve faced in teaching and sharing the Taubman Approach is that it is so different from the traditional material that is taught (which can be the basic cause for many of the problems that musicians encounter and suffer from).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First of all, no matter what kind of business you have, whatever it is, it has to be something you really, truly believe in. I founded my institute and continue to share and further the Taubman Approach because I couldn’t not do it.

Find the right people to work with. It’s incredibly important to surround yourself with people that you trust and bring opinions to the table you may not have considered. When you’re building something, it’s important to have people that you can consult.

Last but certainly not least, stay curious and work tirelessly.
