High-Quality, Impactful Audio Stories - editaudio
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in podcast production but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steph Colbourn, Founder & CEO of editaudio, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
editaudio is an independent queer-owned full-suite podcast production studio working in Canada, the US, and the UK. We create branded shows for clients ranging from educational institutions like McGill University in Montreal, Canada, to tech organizations like Stack Overflow and media organizations like Harper's Bazaar. We also have our series of Originals Launched in 2020; the slate includes Ambie-nominated podcast Date With Daddy and The Springfield Three: Ozarks True Crime, which amassed an audience of over 1.5 million listeners and sold for TV.
Tell us about yourself
Steph created editaudio in 2014 as a freelancer passionate about high-quality, impactful audio stories. It has grown into a team of talented producers and staff from around the world who are on a mission to make the audio industry more representative of what the world looks like. Seeing the real-life impacts of our client work and original productions keeps the work meaningful!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing one of our Original series, Date With Daddy, get recognized for an award. It is hosted by a Black and non-binary creator and talks about lgtq+ sex and dating. It was affirming to know the execs that say things like "there's no audience for that" are wrong.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
- It is keeping sane and advocating for the work and values that are important to me while being a for-profit entity.
- Saying no to clients and potential income when the work doesn't fit the mission.
- Believing in others.
- Believing in yourself.
- Taxes.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- There's a difference between bragging and showing your value. Be upfront about what makes you and your business great.
- Find your community of people in the industry.
- When you're overwhelmed, focus on the task in front of you.
