Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Eddins, Executive Director of Eddins Counseling Group, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Eddins Counseling Group is a comprehensive mental health practice providing outpatient therapy, couples counseling, and career coaching for children, teens, adults, couples, and families. We have a large team of therapists specializing in specific areas, so we are able to match a client's concern with someone who can understand and help them move forward with their mental and emotional health, interpersonal relationships, career, and life satisfaction as well as overcoming challenges such as emotional eating or coping with ADHD in the workplace.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a therapist at heart, but I've also always enjoyed being part of a team and mentoring others. Our work can be isolating, so I wanted to create an environment similar to other professional environments I had worked in where we could collaborate with like-minded professionals. I'm motivated daily by the impact we are making on the lives of members of our community, as well as the support and growth that comes with working as a team. The work that everyone in our organization provides is meaningful and impactful.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm very proud of the team we have established and knowing we are making a meaningful contribution and impact on our community.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The day-to-day challenges of running a business that happens behind the scenes, and others are typically not even aware of. There's a lot that goes into making sure things run smoothly, and the clock never truly stops.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research to understand the hidden costs, including intangibles such as time and labor. (Add 25% to this number).
- Create a vision of what you want things to look like in 5 years, so you know the direction you are heading and can establish systems to support that vision early on. Change is stressful for everyone involved! Document all of your systems and processes from the start. Systems are key!
- Leverage your resources - be clear on what your strengths are and identify others with complementary strengths to create a solid team. Learn to get comfortable letting go of control.
